Most don’t like to admit it – maybe a bit ominous – but the fact is that we have many situations in life that ‘scare us’ about our health … can we agree on this? It could be someone in the hospital, an illness that took you by surprise, a feeling you had after too many drinks or too much spicy food – or just too much food (Thanksgiving dinner), and I hesitate to mention . . . perhaps someone who died way before their time due to a health issue.
Now – let’s get back to happiness. Food is wonderful – there are very few people who wouldn’t agree wiith this. And those that don’t agree would unlikely come across this blog. So, as wonderful as food is, as varied as food is, as joyful that food is because we have unlimited reasons for indulging in it (weddings, birthdays, graduations, company openings – and just ‘victories’ in general), I AM NOT HERE TO POO-POO ANYONE’S LOVE OF FOOD, AND CONSUMING COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF IT. I decided to brush the cobwebs out of my brain, learn something new (computer stuff), and present what I’ve learned over the past couple years . . . about health (specifically a nerve condition) and how my management of food is the key to my number one goal in life: to live long and healthfully.
I might lose some of you with this: but: I’m not going to tell you to stop eating things . . . like bacon, Big Macs, and cheese . . . or even those cheapie hot dogs at the gas station mart (with a bag of chips and a Coke). But while you’re still mid-gasp, let me tell you something that I’mabsoutely sure of – you will learn to eat im moderation and you will enjoy your favorite things even more (caveat – some will naturally float away over the horizon). Let me give you an example, though I can’t imagine losing my love of crispy bacon with eggs or on a hamburger (or just sneaking a piece while the rest of the meal is cooking), I have 95% lost my taste for potato chips. I was beyond addicted, there were always several bags in the house, and I got nervous when the supply ran down; however, I switched largely to nuts in order to tame my nerve condition (house is full of pumpkin seeds, pistachios and more), and over the horizon my hankering (very serious hankering) for potato chips went (better sell your Lay’s stock). In nearly a year, I’ve consumed less than one bag – because a few chips is all I felt like with my burger. I can’t say the same about French Fries though.
One other thing worth mentioning is lemon water – it came highly recommended, and I got addicted to it. I have a big plastic container for which I cut up a whole lemon and add water – then freeze. Nearly everyday, I pull it out of the freezer and add soda water. I love this as much as I used to love potato chips, but it leads me to another love: Coca-Cola (no zero, no Diet). As I now have cases of soda water at the ready, one day I had a half drunk bottle of Coke that had gotten warm, and a fridge full of cold soda water – so I added some (can’t drink warm Coke), and the flavor was nice – is was a whole lot better that water, and the sugar and cola dilution did’t phase me much. I actually keep cans of soda water in the car, so even for a trip to McDonalds – I can get that new twist on one of my favorite drinks.
One thing I’m absolutely sure of is that FOOD is the most important topic to discuss regarding health . . . quantity, quality, variety, contents of, etc. – but on hths platform we will discuss many, many other things: EXERCISE (for different ages, purposes, environments and situations); PLANNING IS CRUCIAL for changes you wish to see in your health (as you age, nurse an ailment, weight-loss, etc.) ; MOTIVATION … well, isn’t that one of the reasons you’re here? and believe it or not, a big reason for me launching this is to get a contiunal drip of motivation from you readers ; PRODUCTS: from supplements, to journals, to exercise equipment, to a motivational coffee mug, this list will grow as I see the needs & desires of my wonderful visitors. NEWS: I plan to stay on top of current events and information regarding health, especially for those of us who see 40 in the rear view mirror (50, 60 & 70 too). Not sure mama would like me divulging this, but she’s in her nineties and going strong, she drinks vodka and smokes with the best of them, and she eats quite a palate of foods and vittles . . . I’ll have to ask her, but I’ve never heard her say: ‘I can’t eat that anymore’.
Well, there are so many books and articles to share with you – along with my own experiences (transformations) that I’m sure you’ll love this site. I’m stil on my journey, as I’m still a little scared as I nurse my nerve problem, but jump on my train and let’s meander through this great life with the goal of improving our health so our lives can be so much better – shall we?
